Gartner's seven 'grand challenges'

Industry analyst Gartner has announced seven "grand challenges" that will dramatically affect the IT industry in the coming years.

In its list of technological hurdles that will need to be overcome, the firm asserts that mobile communications devices in the future will need to be capable of recharging automatically to avoid downtime.

Parallel programming is also a vital new technology that will allow devices to carry out functions in serial, while non-tactile natural computing interfaces are also identified as a key area for development, with gestural recognition touted as a particularly useful technology in removing the need for physical interfaces.

Automated speech translation is the fourth challenge to overcome, while persistent and reliable long-term storage is the fifth.

Increasing programming productivity will also become integral to meeting technological demand, with the firm stating that a 100-fold improvement needs to be seen.

Finally, identifying the financial consequences of IT investment is identified as "one of the most perplexing challenges faced by IT leaders."

Another recent Gartner report has suggested that 66 per cent of top-1000 companies will have formalised technology innovation processes by the year 2010.
