Floods 'pose big risk to business'

A new report has found that flood damage and interruptions caused by natural occurrences can cause companies big problems in terms of business communications. The ZDnet article advises UK businesses to adopt a robust contingency strategy when it comes to managing network solutions during severe weather. One critical step is to itemise contact details of all staff on and off the premises to make sure that business communications can be maintained should a site be compromised. A typical problem faced by businesses during this time is network interruption as a result of flood damage. "If key documents or IT servers are stored in the basement consider moving them to a higher floor to avoid damage from flooding," the publication advises. Another effective method of maintaining efficient operations is to provide staff with back-up mobile communications devices in the event of a fixed-line network going down. The Met Office has recently issued a number of severe weather warnings for various regions throughout the UK, with winds reaching 80 mph in some areas.
