Firms 'need to ensure system security'

Security should be of prime importance to firms reliant on the internet for business communications, one analyst argues. A spokesperson for web security firm Kaspersky argues that the threat from online malware has increased dramatically in the past few years - something businesses need to consider when managing their networks. The number of online threats has reached an unprecedented high, according to security analysts. In 2004 there were around 200,000 unique internet-based security threats identified in a study by the BBC. At the end of 2007 the annual figure had risen above 5.5 million. Some reports suggest there has been a five-fold increase in the number of malware and virus threats between 2006 and 2007 alone. David Emm, senior technology consultant at Kaspersky, comments: "The first [step] is obviously making sure the systems themselves are secure." He advises installing monitoring software that will protect against threats to business communications networks. Then, he suggests, an increased awareness among employees of online threats is needed to encourage diligent usage practices and minimise the risk of a security breach.
