Firms need "practical" data management systems

The key to data management is ensuring there is a process which means no data is lost, while also making sure it is practical and workable, according to an expert. Ian Fraser, marketing manager at the Institute of Risk Management, says before creating a data management system the risks need to be identified and then a system created to manage them. He states: "These processes must be practical so that they are used but not too loose that they are irrelevant and do not provide any worthwhile protection." Mr Fletcher added that particular areas to watch include remote workers and contractors, with plans needed for security breaches in each. However, he states the top priorities are having workable process to "prevent the misuse of data". YouGov carried out research for Sungard which found many firms would struggle in the event of business disruption, with 40 per cent suffering a loss of operations to some degree.
