Firms hit by reduced broadband speeds

Businesses are receiving slower download speeds during peak hours because internet service providers struggle to cope with high traffic volume, a study has claimed.

In tests conducted by Broadband.co.uk, it was found that business broadband users received slower speeds during certain hours.

However, the survey indicated that overall broadband speeds are increasing.

Broadband users received average speeds of 3.36 mbps in May compared to 3.23 mbps in April.

Ed Dawson, spokesperson for the website, said: "Some suppliers ... manage to keep average speeds high across all time periods, suggesting a good level of network capacity."

He added that other networks' speeds drop "quite significantly", indicating that they cannot cope with high volumes of traffic.

The news comes as it was announced Dundee is to become the country's first fibre-optic broadband city, which could see some businesses receive speeds of up to 100 mbps.

It will be available to residents of the city by 2010 and will offer a massive increase in data transfer speeds.
