Expert highlights biggest data security flaws

Even if companies take precautions to protect their business from a data loss scandal, it has been suggested there are often improvements which could be made.

While preventing a data breach is obviously preferable, there are actions that need taking in the event of a leak to lessen the damage, according to independent information privacy and security consultant Rebecca Herold.

Speaking to BankInfoSecurity.com, she highlighted that firms are often preoccupied with other security issues that they fail to create a plan for when these precautions fail.

When asked to outline the typical holes in a company's data breach procedures, Ms Herold said: "First and foremost, most organisations still do not have a documented privacy breach response plan.

"Unfortunately, most seem to think they can handle it ad hoc, however this belief will lead to a much higher cost to organisations because without a documented plan it will take them much longer to determine the true status of the breach."

The spotlight has been turned on data security procedures in recent months due to the highly publicised lapses at British institutions including the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency and Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs.
