Energy usage 'unknown by IT departments'

There is a lack of knowledge about the amount of energy used by IT systems in firms and this must change if companies aim to ease their effect on the environment, it has been suggested.

Energy usage of IT departments at a company reliant on technology can be as much as 85 per cent, according to the software giant Sun.

And the firm's UK and Ireland commercial director, Sue Wilkinson, said it is time that saving energy rose up the agenda of IT departments.

"We all know what we pay at home but there is very little responsibility coming out of the IT department when it comes to business and the reason for this is that they don't pay for the energy," she told the Carbon Footprint IT Summit in London last week.

"I am putting out a challenge to you all to look at your own environments and see what you can do."

In support of Ms Wilkinson's argument, environmental charity Global Action Plan claimed yesterday that IT worldwide makes up two per cent of carbon emissions – a similar level to the aviation sector, but IT's share is growing faster.

While the planet may benefit from the reduced use of its resources, there are also strong business arguments for improving efficiency as it will reduce energy bills.
