Encrypting data 'should be common practice'

UK firms have been advised to follow the example of their American cousins by putting greater emphasis on data encryption.

If the recent spate of information loss scandals were not enough to highlight to firms the importance of data security, industry expert Joseph Hoban warned that further breaches were "on the horizon".

In order to avoid this scenario, he called on the government to impose harsher financial penalties for those found guilty of lapses in data security.

Speaking to ZDNet, Mr Hoban, the vice president of software firm GuardianEdge, compared the UK's penalty system unfavourably to that in the US.

"American organisations understand that prevention is cheaper than cure - and implementing encryption technology is cheaper than the cost of a data breach," he said.

"The UK government needs to follow suit and introduce financial penalties."

Changes to the penalties for allowing a data breach have already been under discussion in government circles, with a House of Commons committee calling for criminal law to apply to guilty parties due to the widespread damage caused by a loss of private records.
