Data loss changes predicted for 2008

Companies are set to work towards improved data loss protection in 2008, it has been predicted by industry experts.

Fuelled by fears following the leakage of 25 million child benefit records from HM Revenue and Customs, the ChannelWeb Network reported that firms are putting increasing emphasis on data security.

Ted Julian, vice president of marketing and security for Application Security, told the website: "There's no question that all of these breaches are driving people to rethink their priorities in terms of security.

"People are saying 'let's step back and realise our data is under siege, what's of value that we need to protect and where is it?'"

It was highlighted that the fines incurred by allowing a data breach to occur would likely pale in comparison to the effect on a company's stock price and reputation.

David Vergara, director of product marketing of data security for CheckPoint, told ChannelWeb: "There are all kinds of studies that show that customers don't want to do business with companies that have experienced a breach."
