Companies reluctant to change internet supplier despite problems

UK businesses are reluctant to change their internet provider despite experiencing problems with their connection, it has been revealed. Research by analysis firm Quocirca found 88 per cent of the 345 IT managers surveyed are not considering a switch in provider in the near future despite just under three-quarters admitting their company could not cope any longer than a day without the internet. Furthermore, over a third of these companies were found to sell online and more than a quarter use VoIP services, which could have serious implications for businesses if they are disconnected for any length of time. Rob Bamforth, principal analyst at Quocirca and author of the report, said companies inevitably lack the time and specialist knowledge to deal with the number of options available to them. He added: "As more and more businesses regard the internet as the backbone of their day-to-day processes, it is important that they understand that internet connectivity can and should be tailored to fit." Internet users are already facing the prospect of addresses running out in the next three years. The European Commission is aiming for a quarter of businesses to switch to Internet Protocol Version 6 in the meantime as an en-masse switch to the system is planned to open up unlimited addresses.
