Companies employing increasing numbers of email monitoring staff

Increasing numbers of companies are employing staff to analyse outbound emails, it has been revealed.

A survey by email security firm Proofpoint has found 35 per cent of businesses with over 20,000 employees have people in place to read the content of outgoing email, 11 per cent of which admitted some staff are recruited specifically for this purpose.

The research, which encompassed Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), has also discovered that 30 per cent of organisations have investigated an email leak of confidential information in the last year and almost a quarter reported terminating an individual’s employment in that time for a violation of email policies.

David Stanley, EMEA managing director at Proofpoint, told ITPro that 38 per cent of staff are reading outbound emails, equating to one in four UK companies.

However, only 16 per cent of these organisations have email monitoring technology despite the risks involved.

Some experts have expressed hope that government proposals to keep records of all phone and VoIP calls, emails and internet usage, will make companies take a closer look at their business communications practices.
