Cloud computing 'faces security challenge'

A technology analyst has claimed that recent developments in mobile, serviced-based computing technology are currently hampered by security limitations.

So-called cloud computing has been touted as a turning point in the business communications industry, allowing users access to full desktop functionality while they are on the move.

Instead of remotely connecting to desktops however, cloud computing relies on servers' hosted services and storing data elsewhere on the network, explains John Naughton.

The move from in-house networks to hosted voice and data services has been compared to the switch from individual generators to the National Grid, he states.

However, he offers a caveat: "If we are betting our futures on the network being the computer, we ought to be sure that it can stand the strain."

Cloud computing is also heavily reliant on server farms and the recent gains that have been made in reducing operating power consumption for such sites must continue before they can be adopted on a global scale, he concludes.

The European Union has today marked its commitment to mobile voice and data communications, with a join research initiative planned to develop reliable virtualised services throughout the region.
