Cables to provide 'huge boost for internet capacity'

Laying scores of new undersea cables in the next few years could provide a "huge boost" for global internet capacity, it is claimed.

Washington-based TeleGeography Research suggests 25 new cables could be laid at a total cost of $6.4 billion (£3.2 billion) by 2010, the Financial Times reports.

Applications such as online video are said to be leading to increased bandwidth usage and TeleGeography indicates more cables could be laid within the two-year timescale.

The telecoms company told the newspaper it is surprising new submarine cable-building is underway despite the potential on existing cables.

It added: "The reasons for cable construction are often a combination of several factors including dwindling available capacity on some cables, a desire for water restoration options, the need for physically diverse routes, competition and high-capacity prices in some regions of the world."

A recent study by broadband.co.uk found British business broadband users are receiving slower than usual speeds during peak hours.

This has been attributed to internet service providers struggling to cope with high traffic volume.
