Business bandwidth requirements set to double

The bandwidth requirements of enterprises are expected to double in the next five years, it has been revealed. However, a survey by market analysis firm Vanson Bourne has found budgets are only expected to rise by five per cent, IT Pro reports. Growing email and web traffic is regarded as the largest issue among the 100 IT decision makers polled, with 39 per cent citing it as an area which could have an effect on bandwidth. Nearly a third believe VoIP and converging voice, data and multimedia technologies will have a major impact on future traffic levels. Economic downturn, growing security threats and preparing and implementing business continuity plans were all regarded as more important IT concerns than increasing network bandwidth, despite 91 per cent of respondents believing their needs will grow significantly in the next five years. The British Chamber of Commerce has led calls for the government and internet service providers to pay for improvements to broadband infrastructure across the UK.
