A new dawn in comms?

Networks used for business communications could become a thing of the past as a 'new internet' develops, it has been suggested.

According to the Times, a new ultra-fast global fibre-based network could allow businesses, scientific and governmental institutions to transmit data at rates 10,000 times faster than conventional broadband connections.

The grid - as the network is known - will soon be switched on to coincide with the initiation of the Large Hadron Collider, which is the largest particle accelerator in the world.

With servers all over the globe storing and analysing the vast amounts of data produced by the machine, this "parallel internet" could see an extended use in the world of business communications.

There are already a number of telecoms companies taking an interest in providing customers with access to the grid.

"Projects like the grid will bring huge changes in business and society as well as science," said Professor Tony Doyle, technical director of the grid project.

A recent report in the Observer has suggested that the huge increases in the amount of data sent over the internet could bring it to a virtual standstill unless upgrades are made to network infrastructure.
