Faster broadband wanted by UK firms

UK businesses are attempting to install high-speed broadband and realise faster networks, it has been reported.

According to research from Point-Topic, the proportion of firms with a minimum connection of ten megabytes a second increased from 18 per cent in October 2007 to 25 per cent in May this year, IT Pro reveals.

The study also discovered 61 per cent of large organisations in the UK say they want to further increase their connection speeds, compared with 39 per cent of smaller firms.

Furthermore, it revealed 13 per cent of businesses have a broadband connection speed of 50 megabytes per second or more.

Tim Johnson, senior analyst at Point-Topic, told the news provider: "Remote access, remote helpdesks, video conferencing and VoIP are all becoming more embedded in day-to-day organisational use."

Last month, London mayor Boris Johnson told the BBC he would like to see the deployment of city-wide mobile and data communications network across the capital.

Mr Johnson said he wants London to become a "Wi-Fi city" ahead of the 2012 Olympic Games, according to silicon.com.
