EC could give Europe unified broadband

The European Commission (EC) is considering creating Europe-wide broadband to bring all nations to the same speeds.

According to a report from the group, the continent could "take the lead" with the next generation of broadband.

Viviane Reding, commissioner for Information Society and Media, said: "The internet of the future will radically change our society."

She added that an increasing number of companies choosing to sell over the internet or implement internet-reliant technologies like VoIP have made the need for high-speed internet greater.

Ms Reding said Europe has the "know-how and capacity" to progress with Web 3.0 technology, stating: "We must make sure that Web 3.0 is made and used in Europe".

She said the technology could result in "anytime, anywhere business, entertainment and social networking" and stated the divide between mobile and fixed lines will be ended.

Research from the EC found internet users in Europe are already using twice the speeds they were in 2006, reporting that last year half had access to broadband at two megabits or higher.

Ms Reding has also recently put a cap on roaming costs for mobile users when calling from abroad.
