Johnson: More Wi-Fi for London

London mayor Boris Johnson is calling on the capital to become a "Wi-Fi city" ahead of the 2012 Olympic Games, it has been reported.

Speaking on BBC London radio, the mayor said the deployment of a city-wide mobile and data communications network provided a "fantastic area of opportunity", according to silicon.com.

Mr Johnson commented: "We've got to have a Wi-Fi city. Never mind having the internet, what we need is a city where anywhere you go, you can log on, you can get on web."

The news provider also reveals that iPass research shows London is the world's top Wi-Fi city for business users, as more than 31,000 were logged in the first half of the year, with the average lasting for 57 minutes.

Last week, Chris Roberts, country director for UK at mobile accessories company Parrot, suggested Near Field Communication will improve wireless Bluetooth services, rather than replace them.
