Fibre-optic network will benefit UK

A fibre-optic network for the entire UK could cost a lot of money but will provide businesses across the country with "huge benefits", says an expert. Edd Dawson, managing director of broadband.co.uk, said government intervention to the scheme is "key" despite the cost of implementation being "huge". He stated the decision rests on whether the UK wants to compete internationally to have a system which "matches the needs for the future". "In the UK we've got the opportunity to take that leap and have a joined up broadband network that really works and delivers to the whole country," he added. The cost for including rural areas in the scheme is factored at half of the £28 billion total price tag, despite them accounting for around 20 per cent of the country, Mr Dawson stated. A recent report from the Broadband Stakeholders Group asserted the costs of deploying to rural businesses is "significantly higher".
