Broadband access 'continues to grow'

The number of countries who will have access to broadband services is continuing to grow and is expected to surpass 60 per cent in 17 countries by 2012.

According to the research firm Gartner, the spread of broadband connections in a number of countries is expected to increase.

The organisation says global connections will amount to 499 million worldwide by 2012, compared to 323 million currently.

Amanda Sabia, principal research analyst at Gartner, said: "We expect some markets will have a broadband ceiling at 80 percent penetration or greater."

She said this growth depends on specific market conditions, with South Korea, Hong Kong and the Netherlands showing high-penetration rates.

In addition, the research firm highlighted that smaller countries have an advantage, in addition to those with a government backed programme.

Michael Phillips, product director at BroadbandChoices.co.uk, recently said the rollout of next-generation broadband is very important to businesses.
