Demand for internet bandwidth 'to double and grow further'

Vast changes in network content and social behaviour are set to see demand for internet bandwidth pass 160 terabits per second by 2010, according to latest research.

A study by the Institute of Advanced Telecommunications at Swansea University stated this will be a doubling in numbers and expects it to grow further, ITPro.co.uk reports.

This will surpass the equivalent of combined broadband network usage for the entire period 1998 to 2008, it has been claimed.

Professor David Payne, author of the study, told the website streaming online video and expansion in data is likely to see demand continue to increase to between 40 and 100 times the current level by 2018.

He said: "It is difficult to see how operators can economically grow existing network architectures to meet this demand and further consideration of the types of networks and the technology deployed is required if they are to ensure profitability."

Recent research by industry analyst Quocirca suggested companies should take into account how the capacity on offer matches their usage patterns and the needs of the applications they intend to use.

Other factors such as reliability, service suitability and support should also be considered over and above raw advertised speed, it was claimed.
