Internet domain names increase 'approved'

A recommendation which will result in an increase in the number of internet domain names has been approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann).

If a final version of the implementation plan is approved by the organisation's board, the process could begin in 2009, with applications for new names expected to be available in the second quarter of the year.

Applications are expected for city-based names such as .nyc for New York, .berlin and .paris.

Peter Dengate Thrush, chairman of Icann, said: "One of the most exciting prospects before us is that the expanding system is also being planned to support extensions in the languages of the world."

It was revealed by the European Commission recently that it is aiming for a quarter of businesses to have changed from Internet Protocol Version 4 to Version 6 by 2011.

This move will increase the number of available internet addresses available, which it is feared could run out in three years if change in system is not made.
