Internet addresses to run out if current trends continue

Nearly 85 per cent of all available internet addresses are in use and could run out by 2011 if current trends continued, it has emerged.

The growing demand for addresses on the WAN needs to be met "effectively and urgently" by businesses and governments, according to an Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) report.

It could mean new users and mobile devices cannot access the internet and will have an impact on telecoms services such as VoIP.

However, network solutions have been offered, with the report stating worldwide adoption of Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) is the answer.

Some regions could adapt to IPv4 as a short-term solution, it has also been suggested.

IPv6 is already being rolled out in China and the OECD warned governments and business across the world should start raising awareness of the need to prepare for the move now.

The importance of the switch will need to be addressed, according to recent research.

Economic downturn, growing security threats and preparing and implementing business continuity plans were all regarded as more important IT concerns than increasing network bandwidth, despite demand for it being expected to double in the next five years, IT Pro reported.
