50% of businesses cannot identify users

A new study has found that half of UK businesses cannot keep track of precisely who is using their networks at any given time, highlighting the need for effective network solutions. Identifying users and devices attached to businesses was identified as a key problem for UK IT managers in the porttracker study, which also found that 95 per cent of businesses could not keep track of all devices using their network. Cited in Comms Business magazine, porttracker also found that 90 per cent of firms required increased funding to adopt secure network solutions, although a significant amount of money is said to be spent ineffectually. Many businesses were found to be expanding the number of available ports on their networks needlessly because they did not have a certain idea of which ports were active and which were not. "If they had a clear overview of which switch was connected to which port, they could dramatically reduce their costs both in terms of hardware spend and man hours," said Julian Rigg, chief executive officer at porttracker. Industry analyst Gartner has also recently advised that effective IT management solutions will become increasingly important to businesses operating in a restrictive economic environment.
