Company data 'put at risk by worker negligence'

A lack of awareness among workers of the consequences of data breaches is potentially leaving large numbers of firms at risk, it has been suggested.

A survey by backup services provider Databarracks has shown a disparity between the importance of corporate data workers use and their poor knowledge about the risks of misplacing it.

While 84 per cent of employees said they would not be able to work for more than half a day without access to company data networks, the survey uncovered a lax attitude to keeping this data secure.

Some 63 per cent of respondents claimed to have accidentally deleted important documents, while 69 per cent said they had stored ten or more items only on their desktop – leaving them at risk of data loss if the system crashes or fails.

"This research paints a frightening picture for UK organisations," said Databarracks managing director Peter Groucutt.

"Almost every business, irrelevant of sector, is reliant on the information stored on its IT network to manage day-to-day operations."

He urged firms to install tighter network security measures and educate their staff on good practice when dealing with secure information.
