Businesses to get government guide to data handling

The UK's first privacy impact assessment handbook for businesses is launched today in order to help companies analyse personal privacy risks before introducing new technologies.

Details of the publication will be explained by representatives from the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), who are scheduled to speak at a Manchester conference this afternoon.

David Smith, deputy commissioner at the ICO, said: "Very often the collection and use of personal information is essential and beneficial to modern life but many people do not realise that data collection is at the heart of surveillance."

He also suggested that giving away personal information leaves "electronic footprints", which create a picture of people's everyday lives.

Therefore, safeguards need to be implemented before introducing new systems and technologies, he added.

The ICO's stated aims include protecting personal information and promoting public access to official information.
