Business benefits of VoIP highlighted

Companies looking to improve their efficiency and save on call costs should investigate voice over IP (VoIP) options, according to IT Week.

The respected technology weekly examined what VoIP services can bring to a business and highlighted areas where they may prove the most useful.

"We are increasingly seeing telephones that can make calls in the traditional fashion when needed, but also use the internet when it's cheaper or more convenient," wrote IT Week's Iain Thompson.

"Such combination phones give consumers a genuine choice over where they buy their services, not just at contract renewal time but every time they make a call."

Converged telecoms handsets were highlighted as being a likely area of growth for VoIP, with Mr Thompson suggesting that in the future the traditional way of having a phone connected to one socket ran by one supplier "may seem quaint".

This follows predictions from web analyst Phil Hill of US VoIP firm Vocalocity that IP telephony will grow substantially in 2008 due to its versatile nature.
