Brown: UK must come to terms with IT security

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has said that British firms and public services still have a "long way to go" on IT security issues.

Speaking at a Commons committee, the PM was answering questions over the progression of the government's plans on ID cards and other IT projects.

And security was especially in the spotlight due to the breach at Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) which released 25 million personal records of Britons claiming child benefit.

Meanwhile, Mr Brown admitted that recent events have provided a clear example of how important "care and security" over people's information should be taken.

The PM called for "better systems" to address the challenges of the "proper organisation of data" and added that every country in the world was facing up to the issues created by computerisation of data.

"I don't think we are alone," he said.

The security breach at the HMRC highlighted the lack of control over personal data at the government department and has lead many companies to look inward to check the resilience of their systems and practices when dealing with sensitive information.

An independent review of how personal information is used and shared among government departments and other organisations in currently underway, having been announced by Mr Brown is October.
