Broadband reliability 'more important than speed' for SMEs

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) place a higher value on a reliable broadband connection than one which can hit higher download speeds, a new survey shows.

According to the study for UK Online, reliability was the most desired feature of a broadband service, followed by having good support and excellent value for money.

Chris Stening, managing director of UK Online, told vnunet.com that this shows that speed is not an issue for businesses.

"Despite recent reports in the media, broadband speed is not necessarily topping UK consumers' list of concerns," he said.

"This is particularly true for business users, who have different priorities when it comes to their internet connection."

The lack of speed was said to not hinder most businesses as the UK Online survey found that 70 per cent UK business mainly use broadband to send email messages.

However, firms were still shown to have a large interest in making sure they select a broadband service that fits their needs, with three-quarters of the 447 companies questioned saying they relied on their connection for the success of their business.
