TEM lets business 'stay ahead'

Companies are being urged to be more competitive rather than cutting costs during the credit and liquidity crisis, according to Rob Bamforth, principal analyst at Quocirca.

Writing for IT-manager.com, he said that companies must remain flexible and customer-focused but should get to grips with telecoms expense management (TEM).

To make the best use of costs, it must be decided if employees should be charged for personal phone calls, he said. A telecoms audit of expenses is therefore advised as this will enable managers to see what they are signing off.

Assigning one manager or department to oversee telecoms expenditure is also recommended.

"Companies need to put in a little effort to optimise their current spending on communications and avoid unnecessary future expense," he stated.

"Rather than simply lightening their loads, they need to invest wisely on ways to be nimble."

With many firms looking to cut telecoms costs, an Aberdeen Group study has found that nearly two-thirds of organisations in the US have either migrated to VoIP-enabled networks or are in the process of doing so.
