Profiling 'aids unified comms'

By profiling the way business communications are used within a company, converged network services can be more effectively introduced, it has been suggested.

In a report in Computer Weekly, firms are advised that the first consideration in planning a unified communications deployment should be a telecoms audit of how mobile employees need to be able to carry out their jobs.

"Surveying employee mobility can help strengthen the IT's return-on-investment case to the business," the publication notes.

For example, by replacing a desk phone and mobile phone with one single communications device for a worker who spends the majority of their time out of the office, businesses can save significantly, it asserts.

Mark Ferrar, director of infrastructure at NHS Connecting for Health, told the online resource that one of the principal challenges in successful mobile communications strategies was making sure that workers had the most suitable wireless functionality for their location.

The Connecting for Health project is responsible for linking GPs and communities to hospitals to provide people with better levels of care.
