Analyst: Make disaster recovery disaster avoidance

With so much important company data now stored digitally on IT systems, many firms are becoming concerned about keeping their business going in the event of a disastrous system failure.

But one analyst has called for the focus to shift from disaster recovery to avoiding disasters in the first place.

Dominic Hill, a consultant for Siemens, said: "Many organisations spend a significant amount of money and effort on recovery capabilities and the associated plans, but neglect to address the issues that would make the operation more resilient and less in need of recovery in the first place."

He advocated the implementation of standards on business continuity to help make sure that system operations remain unbroken.

These regularly include restrictions on access to the inner workings of the IT network, keeping documentation up to date and ensuring that changes to the systems such as patches are controlled carefully to reduce the threat of lost business hours.

In addition, Mr Hill called on firms who choose to outsource their IT support to keep tabs on the progress of the project through "carefully prepared and suitably detailed legal contracts".

These should provide clear and measurable targets for the project to achieve, which should mean that any problems are highlighted before they become a disaster.
