Air passengers to check in with BlackBerry?

It may soon be possible for airline passengers to check in and receive boarding passes via BlackBerry handsets, following the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) agreement to introduce two-dimensional barcode boarding passes.

The executive director at Mobile Travel Technologies, a company that is currently looking to develop mobile-check-in systems for airlines, has welcomed the decision by the organisation.

Commenting on the new mobile communications technology, which sends messages containing a barcode, flight number, name of ticket holder and seating information, Gerry Samuels said: "It will enable airlines to extend the self-service check-in model to those travellers who do not have access to internet-connected PCs or are flying from airports without kiosks."

Last month, the IATA published research that showed passengers are now requesting more opportunities to take control of their travel experience, with 89 per cent preferring e-tickets to the paper equivalents.

The Corporate Air Travel Survey also found that 56 per cent of people had experienced internet check-in.
