41.4m expected in global remote working next year, research finds

It is expected 41.4 million employees will spend at least one day per week remote working worldwide next year.

This is despite opposition to the trend from those who prefer face-to-face interaction, according to Gartner.

Formal plans will be needed and traditional office made available for workers who sustain remote working on a regular basis, it is said.

Andrew Walker, research director for Gartner's research group, said most enterprises that allow for "virtual offices" do so informally and are not realising the full advantages of such a scheme.

He explained: "A more formal approach demonstrates to new recruits that the enterprise is willing to make a long-term commitment to work/life balance, which is key to employee satisfaction and retention."

British firms which employ staff in remote working have been assured by the National Group on Homeworking that they will be covered by their insurance, so long as the provider has been made aware of their circumstances.
